Only around 18 min by tram outside of Alicante city you will find Playa de San Juan. A stretch of beach approx 7 km long that is often described as the best beach in Spain. Having read that, I knew I had to go since there are few better things in life than a beautiful beach (at least for me).

Playa de San Juan outside of Alicante, Spain

This is mainly a residential area and there are not many hotels, but there is a wonderful one called hotel Almirante, I will be doing a full review on it in a later post.

The beach itself is as mentioned long and perfect for long beach walks. The sand is golden and the water clear and even has a Blue Flag. There are many restaurants along the way and a few shops on the promenade.

Promenade Playa de San Juan

Plenty of room for activities like rollerskating, beach volleyball and surfing when the waves are high. I love the feel of the place and it reminds me of CA in some ways, lots of palm trees and flowers. One thing that is lacking is shade, you either have to bring your own umbrella or rent a chair and/or umbrella. Current prices that I saw in May 2023 are 7€ for each.

I’ve only been there in the beginning of the summer season, so not all the beach bars were open, but I’m sure it’s really busy by July, August.

The area is quiet and feels very safe and it’s easy to take the tram into the city. Beware that you pay onboard the tram using a machine and not outside before you get on. You can pay with both card and cash. If you are coming from Alicante, you can get off at the tram stop Costa Blanca and the beach is right in front of you.

On weekends it does get very crowded on the tram, as this is a popular beach for the locals. You can also take the tram up the coast and explore more of the beautiful scenery of Costa Blanca.

In summary, Playa de San Juan is well worth a visit, especially if you are like me and enjoy long beach walks and a bit of quiet time to reflect away from the crowds.
