Cancun, Mexico is one of those places that I loved when I saw pictures of it, and it turned out the beach was exactly as beautiful as I was hoping for. Cancun is a city, but the beach and the hotels where most of us end up is in the Hotel Zone. A stretch of beach with hotels in a row. Most of them are huge All Inclusive hotels, but here and there are places where you can also rent an Airbnb (which is what I did).
The water has the most amazing color I’ve seen and shifts in all colors of blue and turquiose and yes no filter is needed! The sand is white and powdery, with plenty of shells.
This is also where the sea turtles come up and lay their eggs. The times I’ve been there most of the eggs have already been hatched but there have been plenty of eggs lying around. The hotels make enclosures to protect the eggs and make it safe for the babies to crawl to the ocean. Seeing this is still on my bucket list.
The most quiet part of the Hotel Zone is the south, which is also my favorite. It has a more relaxed feeling than the north end where there are clubs, bars and malls. Either way you can easily take a bus between the two. The south end is perfect if you enjoy more calm, long beach walks, less crowds and pure relaxation.
On the other side of the road is the Nichupte Lagoon, where you can find some restaurants with great views of the sunset. It is also home to a lot of crocodiles, so you might want to be careful walking around in the dark there. Lizards are everywhere and they love to catch some rays in the middle of the sidewalk. Sometimes you can meet new lizard friends at restaurants too!
Cancun is not cheap, especially if you want to stay in one of the All Inclusives, but there are deals to be had. November and December is a great time to go, it’s right at the end of hurricane season and before Christmas crowds. There is less people and a bit lower prices, but at least I have had great luck with the weather. Hot and sunny, occasional rain, still humid but not crazy humid.
Have you been to Cancun? What did you like/not like?
