Gran Canaria is not a big island, even though it is the biggest one in the Canaries. In the northern part of the island you will find the city of Las Palmas and the beach Las Canteras. Since I was staying in the south, in Puerto Rico/Amadores I took the bus to Las Palmas for a day visit.

There are more than one buses you can take, but I’d suggest no 91 which is the express bus. It only has a few stops (incl the airport) before it reaches Las Palmas and travels mostly on the motorway. I payed around 6 euro and it took around 1 hour, 10 min one way. You can pay with your cc/debit card onboard.

I didn’t have time to see much of the city itself, I was aiming for the beach!

It was a beautiful warm day and the waves were huge! I can see why so many come here to surf! The sand is golden colored and the beachwalk is close to 3 km. This particular day was very crowded, and while it is a beautiful beach I personally prefer a bit more quiet surroundings.

If you love the urban beach style with lots of people and beach volley etc, you will love this place! The promenade is filled with restaurants and there is a big mall at one end as well with fashion stores incl Primark.

Summary: Las Canteras is a great beach with big waves and will be a perfect fit if you love the urban beach setting and like lots of people around.
